Our Work The
Foundation carries out its research, development and advocacy activities
through five program areas:
This program builds on the masterwork of our founding president, entitled Cuba: la Naturaleza y el Hombre (Cuba: Nature and Humanity). In these 50 volumes, Dr. Núñez Jiménez brought together his half-century of research into the key elements that have shaped our country: climate, geology, social anthropology, history, culture, and more. We promote research into environmental issues facing Cuba, from an interdisciplinary perspective that includes social and cultural as well as environmental factors, and we encourage greater dialogue between the natural and the social sciences. Our goal – through research, environmental education, grassroots community development projects, and advocacy – is to promote a sustainable culture of nature that favours fragile ecosystems and biodiversity. We work with schoolchildren and their teachers, community groups, other Cuban organizations, decision-makers, and the country’s mass media. In these varying combinations, each appropriate to its objectives, we help to address local environmental problems, supply environmental information and resources, build awareness, and promote dialogue and mutual support. This program is focused on improving the quality of human life in urban settings, in effective, sustainable ways that also protect and enhance the environment. We conduct research, hold training sessions with interested partners, and develop and implement hands-on pilot projects in such areas as urban agriculture or local recycling. Through activities such as these, we hope to make the Foundation the leading source in Cuba for information and support in all areas of sustainable urban development. This program is active in a broad range of activities that seek to integrate the interests and well-being of consumers and the environment. We work with the staff of both governmental and non-governmental bodies, training them in the value and issues of consumer education and sustainable consumption. We also help community groups with local sustainable consumption projects; carry out awareness campaigns about the impact of consumption on the environment; promote consumer rights and responsibilities; and support the development of a national system of consumer protection. We reinforce all this work with a variety of publications, ranging from the regular Boletín Medio Ambiente (Environmental Bulletin) to school texts, and other books and documents. The Foundation has in its care a wealth of scientific, cultural and historical documentation and other materials. It is our responsibility to conserve this patrimony, and – more than that – to see that it is accessible and used to promote education, research and an improved quality of life. By integrating the resources of our library, museum and archives in this way, we create one coherent body of materials that can more effectively serve the interests of our community.
